Marley Spoon Chicken Meatballs with Marinara & Spaghetti With Italian green beans I have to say, ground chicken has come a long way since we used to buy it back in the 90s. These meatballs were actually pretty good and despite being frozen they cooked up really nice and moist - not dry at all. This had a “marinara” sauce that was basically just a really boring canned spaghetti sauce - it didn’t have much flavor at all. There was a tiny pile of spaghetti - very, very tiny pile of spaghetti. I suppose this is to keep the carbs down but honestly, just replace it with a less carbonic pasta like a spinach pasta, or any sort of vegetable type pasta. Put those meatballs on a pile of it & it would’ve been so much better. Instead, they paired this with yet more green beans - did I mention I hate green beans? I don’t know how I ended up with so many meals with green beans, but I am disappointed. Had to drizzle them with olive oil. And some spices. I even had to add some salt. Marley spoon by Martha Stewart I’ve been a huge fan of Martha Stewart for most of my life so that’s why I decided to try out Marley spoon next despite it not having as good of a deal as some of the other ready meal services. I’m pretty sure I got 40% off the first box with free shipping, however, I was indeed charged shipping? Or perhaps I was charged “handling” /sarcasm. But this is one of the services that let me order on Wednesday with a delivery on Monday, which CookUnity was not, so I like that. Ordering was simple, the website was pretty easy to use and they had a decent variety of meals to choose from. My delivery window was 8 AM to 8 PM on Monday and by the time I updated, it said it should be here by 5 PM. This was delivered by a private courier of some kind called Jitsu? I’ve never heard of them before, however they managed to drop my box off at 10:45 AM so that’s a plus. The meals are packed with a large ice pack in a ginormous insulated bag inside a cardboard box. I’ve never seen anything like this bag, lol, it was huge. I got 10 meals with a couple of duplicates to share with my husband however, I ended up with three duplicates and was missing one item. A couple of days after my order was delivered I finally received an email letting me know that they had to substitute something they were out of. I had already contacted customer service at that point and was pretty annoyed with how long it was taking for anyone to get back to me. They ended up giving me $15 off my next order which, thanks, but probably will not be happening. Another thing I did not realize about the Marley Spoon meals were that they arrive frozen or mostly frozen which is fine because then I know the meals can go in the freezer as these almost all immediately did, but I was expecting fresh meals. Marley Spoon Smoked Chipotle Pork with Salsa Verde Plus quinoa stuffed peppers There was actually a huge amount of smoked pork in this one and it was pretty good. Quite moist and flavorful and didn’t seem to be damaged by freezing. There were fresh grilled corn, which wasn’t as sweet as the fresh corn from Tempo, but still pretty tasty. The salsa verde was surprisingly very bland. And as much as I hate peppers of any kind the quinoa stuffed peppers were actually really good. Well, the peppers were really good, the quinoa was very bland (i expect by its nature) and again I had to zazz that up with some spices and olive oil. Marley Spoon Hickory Smoked BBQ Sauce Pork with Broccoli and surprise cabbage! I’m really disappointed with the lack of chicken in these meals, I somehow ended up with virtually all pork (& a little beef) and I don’t mind pork, especially shredded barbecue pork, but this is way. too. much. pork. (Pork is starting to sound like a weird word.) This had a decent barbecue sauce, nice and sweet. But there was not enough of it, especially compared to the amount of pork that was in there - which was a lot. They included an interesting apple & red cabbage something or other, it was okay but frankly, I wish they could’ve just either used beats, which would’ve been delicious or had the balls to use sauerkraut because sauerkraut would’ve been *amazing* with this. The broccolis were tiny - absolutely the smallest broccoli florettes I’ve ever seen - and they didn’t even fill up like half of the container section they were in. Marley Spoon Pork Enchiladas with Salsa Verde Oh, look at that, it’s pork again, yay. And it’s the same shredded pork. It’s just in enchilada form form. This is one of the duplicates that I got so that my husband could have some and like he said, this was tasty but very wet and he’s not wrong. Apparently being frozen and then reheated made this end up being very watery thus making the flour tortilla fairly juicy, and yet rubbery at the same time. The cheeses also did not seem to melt very well. I put this in for the full five minutes from frozen because I forgot to defrost it before my workday and it just did not cook up very well. It tasted really good, tho - just a bad texture. The vegetable salsa on the side was great and I do enjoy that shredded pork even though I’ve had it like nine times over the last week and a half but yeah, gimme something else now. Marley Spoon Baked Manicotti with Vodka Marinara Sauce I love pasta, I especially love pasta that’s filled with ricotta, so this was right up my alley and I was pretty happy to have this one. Marley Spoon meals arrive frozen, which I did not realize would happen - so the manicotti didn’t really fair too well. It was incredibly tasty and the vodka sauce was amazing, but the manicotti noodles themselves were very chewy. Impossible to cut through but again very tasty. The vegetables on the side were classic Martha Stewart vegetables and I should’ve known better. There was zucchini, eggplant and two kinds of peppers. I pretty much dislike all of those things. It is really sad when the peppers are my favorite part of a vegetable medley. So I definitely had to add some olive oil and Trader Joe’s 21 seasoning salute and I even added a little bit of salt because oh my gods they were so bad. Marley Spoon Hickory Smoked Beef with BBQ Sauce & Yukon Gold Potatoes With green beans on the side Once again, like the previous pork meal, this has a lot of meat. The smoked beef it was a good consistency, very shredded and tasted great. The barbecue sauce was the kind I am partial to, smoky-sweet. Mashed potatoes were a little bit pasty and bland - I expected Yukon gold potatoes to taste a little bit better than this, but again this was all from frozen so I can’t really judge too much. Holy hell I hate green beans (green beans have been the bane of my existence since I was a child and I had to help my mother process green beans from the garden, snapping the ends off and they were disgusting), I had to load these with spices just to be able to eat them. Marley Spoon Beef Shepard’s Pie With broccoli Why did I save this for last? The picture on the website made it look really good but, uh. Do you see how empty the container is? I’ve complained about the TINY broccoli florets before that don’t even fill up half the section - they taste amazing but there is not enough. And then the shepherds pie - barely any mashed potatoes and what was there was lackluster, it did have good cheese which saved that part a bit. But the beef…I swear it was Taco Bell beef, just without any flavor. It was just the weakest, most grainy, shitty textured “ground beef” I’ve seen and there’s nothing that could save it. This was incredibly disappointing all the way around. So that’s thankfully a wrap on the Marley Spoon meals. This meal was pretty indicative of the whole Marley Spoon experience for me, the meals could be tasty but it’s outshined by weird ingredients, flavors and textures. And poor customer service. Some of these meals also should’ve not been frozen, they just couldn’t be saved after that. I really expected better from a Martha Stewart brand, especially for the price paid.
